I should check out Paprika sometime soon.

I have a bad feeling about Tangled.  Princess and the Frog was a good movie, but Disney hasn't crafted any good solid female leads since Mulan, IMO.

Of course I have a worse feeling about Alpha and Omega.

If you think American Dad was a bad show, don't even glance at The Cleveland Show.  It's just. . .sad.

Satoshi Kon was my personal idol...

This is kind of a turning point in my life. :(

Here is more information:

Holy cow!  It doesn't say what he died of, either...

Yeah, Paranoia Agent was fantastic, and Tokyo Godfathers as well. I haven't seen his other stuff.

Re Tangled, I'm sure they'll still make a good movie of it, I just get tired of females always taking the back seat in kids entertainment.

Satoshi Kon passed away

Terrible news came out. One of the founders of MADHOUSE informed that Sathosi Kon passed away at the age of 47.

Here's the full article on ANN:

He will be missed, but at least he left a brilliant body of work. I still think that Paranoia Agent and Paprika are masterpieces.

"Well, the mystery is solved about why Disney is calling Rapunzel "Tangled."

The Princess and the Frog didn't pull in the male viewers for the big bucks, so Rapunzel's movie is going to be centered on the prince instead of Rapunzel.

I won't even bother to rant."

As much as I hate the name change, the idiots in the marketing department trying to appeal to people other then little girls actually may be a good move.

The directors, storyboard artists, and animators can't help that the people who market their movie are a bunch of morons who'll do anything for a quick buck. So I'm going to support the directors (Byron Howard and Nathan Greno: both extremily talented young artists) and animators all the way.

I am the terror that flaps in the night...

This re-imagining of Darkwing Duck made me laugh.

Princess movies are out of date.  They've stopped being good at animal movies years ago.  And that's pretty much 90 of their material.

This is what happens when movies are made by marketers and accountants... although I personally had hoped that Lasseter's influence would have prevented this kind of nonsense from cropping up. It certainly doesn't seem to as much in Pixar's film roster.

Then again... they are making Cars 2.

My Feature Film

Hey guys, I think I may have mentioned this a long time ago but, for the last year or so, I've been working on my own feature length film with some friends of mine. Here's the teaser trailer:

Linkage!

I've got about 35 minutes fully animated and another (estimated) 10 minutes in animation right now. It's going to be about an hour and a half long.

The animation is being split between myself and one other person about 50/50.

So yeah, it's been a crazy experience and I've learned a ton about trying to structure a feature-length story. It's a far from perfect film, but it's certainly been a really cool experinece, and if I do another one (which I plan to), I'll be more prepared.

The whole thing should be finished by December so keep and eye out for it and wish me luck! I've got a long way to go.

I'll keep you all updated.

Cheers!

reply to neo-golden animation of the 90s

hi, i am new member to the site. Regarding the 90s, one major setback was the collapse of the animation studios from the former socialist european and soviet republics. Their output in the previous decades was immense and often of high quality. Fortunately after some years of struggle they adapted to new markets, though with some problems. But it is good to see back animation from russia and eastern europe.

Not quite sure why I find this short so funny, but it has me laughing everytime I watch it. Only a minute long and completely silent.

Weird.  Tale of Despereaux was criticized for being too dark for kids.  9 was criticized for being too dark for kids(despite being PG 13).  Nobody dares pick on Pixar.

I've been quietly waiting for Pixar to, for lack of a better word, officially SUCK since Monsters Inc.  Looks like that's not going to happen any time soon.  I can still count the Pixar movies I only gave three stars to on one hand.

How to Train You Dragon...

How to Train You Dragon has a release date of October 15 for the USA, according to Paramount Home Entertainment. I'm kind of hoping that a European release is due not long after, or failing that, that the US blu-ray is also region B as well as A.

Toy Story 3

Loved the film, after watching supposedly dark stuff that turned out to be complete fluff like The Tale of Desperaux and that, it was great to see a mainstream company make a film that could be considered as dark as a film can get whilst still within the lowest advisory rating possible.

The auditorium was full of young children, none of which seemed to have a problem with the intensity of the whole thing, kids are a lot tougher than adults give them credit for. Of course the reason it can be so dark is that the characters are so well-known and well-liked; and once you get an audience to really relate to the characters, you can really put their lives in danger, it a legit storytelling tool that Hollywood's been seemingly ignoring for years, if not practically forever.

Essentially the reason that I went to see the thing is that I had to review the game based on it,* and I wasn't about to do that without first watching the film to avoid any potential spoilers.

Hope to write up a review shortly.

*I really did have to write a review for the game, at least if I wanted Disney to send another game later on, anyone interested in reading it can do so here; I guess you could say that I've been quite busy of late. For what it's worth Disney's report back to the site manager on my review was very positive.

"“The Legend of Korra” will be more mature than the original show. . ."

Shoot.  Book Three had some pretty hefty stuff.  I don't see how the new show can top that in terms of maturity.

Legend of Korra

YES!  Thank you Nickelodeon and Bryan and Michael!  I knew you had more stuff in you!  Keep the saga going!  This sure beats that planned sequel for Mysterious Cities of Gold, which is going on more than a decade late!

So if she's the new Avatar, assuming that her father wasn't an Avatar or even a bender, she would most likely be an Earthbender(whoops that would be Waterbender, getting my cycle backwards).

This is unusual for the world of Avatar.  It's never mentioned that an Avatar appears that was a direct descendant of a previous one.

Incredible piece of stop-motion/graffiti art animation by Blu... I have a feeling I've posted his last piece of work in the forum at some point.

I love how this one mixes the graffiti with real objects and all the interaction between the two... like the graffiti lobster playing with the trash bin.

enjoy.

Airbender

Is anyone planning on seeing the live-action Last Airbender this weekend?

I popped over to Rotten Tomatoes to see what the advanced reviews had to say just now... only 12 so far, but still the condemnation is so universal I'm beginning to wonder... I don't think I've ever see a tomatometer score of 0 on a mainstream movie... but hey, maybe it's only been the really, REALLY grumpy reviewers so far...

Oh, and as an aside... I found this interesting article on Airbender continues a tradition of racism in casting that Hollywood--sadly--seems to be famous for...

....and ironically, Jessica Rabbit was a direct reference to Tex Avery's 'Red Hot Riding Hood' from about 45 years before.
