Grumpy seventy-eight-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen's life-long dream was to have an adventure and by tying thousands of balloons and fitting sails to his house, he plans to do exactly that; flying off to see the wilds of South America. However, Carl finds that he is not going on this trip of a lifetime alone, as he soon finds he has a stowaway aboard, optimistic eight-year-old wilderness explorer Russell, who was on Carl's porch at take-off.
