The Midnight Snack

Tom catches Jerry trying to steal cheese from the refrigerator. After making the mouse put the Swiss back, Tom decides to have a snack of his own, all the while teasing Jerry. However when he accidentally breaks a china set, Mamma-Two Shoes comes down to investigate the noise, so a frantic Tom frames Jerry for his crimes.

Van Beuren Studio's Tom & JerryUnlike in the previous short, Puss Gets the Boot, Tom and Jerry now have their famous names. However, the precise origin of their christening is unclear. Some reports suggest that the origin’s lie in the Van Beuren studio’s Tom and Jerry shorts; a studio where Joseph Barbera worked for a brief period. Another source suggests that the names where poled out of a selection of names suggested by the animation team.

After this short producer Fred Quimby told Hanna and Barbera not to make any more Tom and Jerry shorts, to “…not put all our eggs in one basket…” This would have been the end if Quimby hadn’t got a letter from Besa Short, a Texas theatre chain owner that he greatly respected. Because of the letter Quimby green-lighted the making of more Tom and Jerry cartoons.
