Spirited Away

Young Chihiro and her family come upon a mysterious tunnel and haunted town that lead to the Land of Spirits, a place of gods and monsters that is ruled by the greedy witch Yu-baba. After Chihiro's parents are transformed into pigs, she must surrender her name and serve in this world in the hope that she might someday be able to rescue them. Initially sulky and listless, Chihiro (or Sen, as she's now called) finds inner strength and allies as she establishes a new identity in this strange world. But can she win back her name and return home? --from Nausicaa.net

"Spirited Away" was released in Japan in 2001 and became the highest grossing film ever in that country--yes, even beating "Titanic". It also went on to win the Japanese equivalent of an Oscar for 'Best Picture of the Year', one of a handful of anime films in history to beat out their live-action competition in that category.
