Gumby Adventures

Gumby is back, more than 30 years after his original TV series. Creator Art Clokey is still at the controls, writing and directing this 1980's reincarnation which sees Gumby and his claymation pals Pokey, Prickle and Goo living on a farm and forming a rock band (The Gumbys) as well as introducing some new characters such as a wooly mammoth and Gumby's pet chicken(!) The show mixes new material with original cartoons from the 1950's-60's series. It saw a new boom of Gumby-mania which led to a feature film in 1995.

See my review of 'The Gumby Show' to fill in the blanks here. I'm docking a few points here because the 80's segments of this new show, while good, weren't...

The return of Gumby to TV is largely attributed to Eddie Murphy doing a continuing skit which used Gumby as a character, on Saturday Night Live in the mid 80''s.

The voices in the original 50's and 60's segments are redubbed in the 1980's show, and so far as I can gather, these are the dubs used in the boxed set (which I should add is NOT specifically of the 1980's series, so don't expect to get the band/chicken/mammoth thing, nescessarily - though on the other hand, I'm not sure that they aren't in it either).

Generally, buyers of this 7 DVD boxed set who were fans of the original Gumby series have been pretty unhappy (to say the least) with this redubbing of the music and dialog - but perhaps those who remember the 80's series will not mind so much. For those who are after the 50's and 60's episodes in their original form, see the DVD links in the profile for the original series The Gumby Show
